What is a C-wire and why does it matter?

It is the common wire that gives a thermostat continuous power rather than borrowing it from the heating or cooling circuit. Many older homes do not have one run to the thermostat, which is the usual reason a smart thermostat behaves erratically or will not hold a connection. Verifying it is part of the install.
